This piece is a more abstract take on pattern. Within it, there are many smaller patterns but when they are combined, they don’t form a clear or repetitive design. I like this because it reflects the process of using the oil pastel in the same way repeatedly, yet the outcome feels un planned. i also used water and pigment for the red, The way the pigment react with the water creates a unique pattern every time. Although this isn’t my favourite piece, I like how it moves away from a typical pattern while still holding the qualities of one. This was inspired by the many things in London like buildings, tubes and roads that are repeated but remain different.

This piece was created using acrylic paint and oil pastel. I chose to combine these mediums because I liked how I could strip back the paint to reveal underlying layers while still keeping the distinct qualities of each medium. The work is inspired by the way different types of housing, buildings, and machines run along side each other throughout London, interacting without clashing.

This is an edited version of the pattern i created with circular shapes. i really like the colours created as well as the shapes. This edit was in order to create more solid shapes and colours to create print from.

This is an edit of both patterns i created, combined. i combined the pattern inspired by the tube seats with the paint marks i had made. I like this outcome as they work together but don’t overlap too much. Although i would change the colours in the future and i also would use less line as it appears a bit too busy.

In this first piece, I explored the idea of pattern and the different places it can be found. I used water carefully shaped into rounded squares, then added red and blue pigments to form various shapes and patterns within the painted water. I really like how the two pigments didn’t mix but instead remained separate while still interacting with each other in a unique way each time. The marble-like effect that happened is great to observe and will give me ideas on shapes and designs that I can later incorporate into my prints.

In this piece, I used red acrylic paint pressed between two pages to create completely random and unique shapes and marks. From there, I added green acrylic paint, working around the red shapes. The green areas are much more structured, calculated, and solid this creates a strong contrast with the messiness and randomness of the red. I really like this balance between no control and control, and I think this piece gives a good foundation for developing prints and experimenting with editing.

This is an edited version of the green and red piece. I was particularly drawn to the outlines formed around the marks and shapes, so I increased the contrast to make them stand out more clearly. I also adjusted the colours to create a wider range of options and explore different effects and outcomes.

This is another edited verison of the red and green acryic paint. i kept the original colours just slightly tweaked them. i realy love the outlines.

This pattern was inspired by the repetitive designs found on tube seats. I was drawn to the simplicity of the shapes and how they come together to form intricate and detailed patterns. For this piece, I used a simple colour palette of greens, yellows, and blues, along with a thick black marker to create bold lines and curved shapes. I think this design also can be used as a strong base for editing and could give me ideas for simple block prints.

Theese are edited version of my orignal pattern. I really love how theese turned out i love the grain and depth theese both have.

This piece focuses on keeping the expressive, messy marks of the paint while filling the negative space with simple block shapes that still add a sense of detail and pattern. The combination of them reminds me of the conservation of old buildings in London, where the original structures are maintained and new modern architecture is built around them, complementing rather than disturbing the old. And i wanted to turn it into a pattern.

While exploring patterns in the city, I noticed that many designs use shapes to create symmetry. I wanted to experiment with this idea by using objects such as the end of a paint tube to print repeating shapes that remain the same in form but vary slightly in their marks. I really like the layered effect created by the different colours. This piece was inspired by the hidden shapes and curves of the underground structures within the city.

While exploring colour in London, I started to notice new as well as repeating colour combinations found them in posters, graffiti, brickwork, nature and loads more . I realised that the way a colour is perceived is heavily influenced by its surroundings especially within the city. This led me to base my “exploring colour” task on focussing how the context around a colour can completely transform the way it appears. I really wanted to explore this idea but in my own way including bits of realism as well as my own abstraction.

1- This piece is demonstrating in the simplest form how contrasting and out of place colours (in this instance black) can look when compared to bright colour. The black becomes over powering and the vibrance of the red and blue all of a sudden sinks to the back of the focal point. This is significant as if this black was layered over a photograph taken in a very urban location filled with greys and blacks it would not stand out at all.

2- In this piece i have done the opposite. i have contrasted the greys and dull colours of the background with vibrant blues and reds taken from various places and marks i have seen all over London. This really emphasises the idea that the context and surroundings of a colour can change it completely. i have seen these colours amongst various graffiti walls all over London in places like Shoreditch and Hackney wick but only now i feel they are at their mot vibrant.

3- This is a vibrant wall in Hackney being over powered by the deep black found in other parts of the city. The black looks out of place and un-belonging

4- This is a more abstract piece that was influenced by how the colours seen across the city made me feel and how they connected to my self and my own experiences. All the colours that i saw resembled or inflicted memories and feelings within me. Weather it was a consequence decision to connect the colours to emotions or not it did make me feel something. What i discovered about colour is that it connects with everyone in a completely different way.

This is a simple piece that really shows the vibrance of colour when its compared to dull shades.

i took a different approach with this piece as i wanted to connect with how the colour is created. Lots of places i saw full of colour were created by spray paint, therefor i created the colour upon a spray paint bottle to really draw together the story and life cycle of how the art and colours are created. i painted, drew and expressed places such as China town that i visited and became inspired by the colours in the surroundings.

-Throughout all of my work created i only used shapes that i had seen all around the city. The little doodles are taken from zoomed in art work, graffiti, buildings and shapes found amongst them all.
